[fanfic] [generator rex] Six Months Without Rex
Six Months Without Rex
For the first month, Cesar poured through every resource he could. He attached selenium detectors on every Providence aircraft, scoured the world trying to find his brother’s biosignature. Every night, he came back to his lab and slept on the floor. The walls closed around him in silence. Cesar began a mantra in his mind, I’ll find Rex, I know I will, I’ll find him.
Nothing. For the first time, the world was silent.
The second month, White was presumed dead. Holiday knocked on his door, saying, Cesar we’re leaving now but we’ll find him. We’ll find him.
Cesar wasn’t listening. He has a new project on his hands, now that the cure had disappeared. He wasn’t going to turn his back to the world now. Rumours spread from corner to corner of Providence, of “that” woman. Cesar could care less, unless it benefited his work.
Black Knight. Ridiculous name, really.
In the third month, Cesar has nightmares of the Nanite Event. Completely illogical. It was a thing of the past. He woke up to sweat and the tang of fear, and realized there was someone in his lab. A well-dressed woman, in purples and blacks, with the sharp look of a predator. He tensed at her gaze.
She shook it off, “I need your help.”
“Not interested.”
“It could help your brother.”
“Not interested.”
“Don’t you want to save the world?”
He pauses.
“Not interested.
Fourth month and Cesar was wearing away. Black Knight had been leaving prototypes, “gifts” at his lab. Of course, one doesn’t waste, so he took them and gave her no response.
“Don’t you want to save the world?”
Who didn’t?
Five months later, Cesar told Black Knight he’d do it. She stroked his shoulder lovingly. Cesar felt sick, but for the first time… he felt sure of his decision. He was going to save the world. Just like his brother.
When Rex leaves Providence, Cesar shaved off his beard.
