It was shortly after the Beckett siblings disappeared. No, not disappeared, Jim thought, dead dead dead. He wasn't afraid but the situation stank to high heaven. Everyone knew the Becketts in small and large ways. It was a loss no one had an explanation for.
Loki had simply told him to get his head in the game (okay no he actually said something like "This is an eventuality that awaits us all if we are unable to grapple with the reality we exist in." To be fair, Jim felt he was nicer about it than usual). Two weeks later, they were called to the coast of Mumbai. High-risk, high-tension, high of all the things that could go wrong.
Jim drank it up.
But this Kaiju ("Dupli" he found out later) could split itself and they had foolishly aided in its duplication process. The newly born Kaijus attacked his flank and Jim screamed while Loki watched. He had enough in him to crush the Kaiju's skull but everything went black soon after.
When he woke up, Loki told him quietly, "We're retiring."
Jim was too shellshocked to protest (no, that's a lie, he protested, long and hard, in every corridor, until Loki slapped him and said, "They destroyed her. There was nothing to recover. We are through.") It took him even longer to realize he was being let go.
But Loki waited for him (cutting remarks armed to the teeth, Jim thought wistfully) and took Jim gently in his arms and guided him to the helicopter. Loki never left, never considered it. And Jim let go.
